Each participant received chiropractic care and 93 percent of them found relief following their adjustments, even though 43 percent of whiplash sufferers overall usually never find relief. This confirms that chiropractic care is a great way to avoid chronic pain after a crash.
It's important to remember that studies have also found that delaying care after a car crash can negatively affect recovery time, so getting in to see Dr. Michael Chanatry as soon as possible is key to having a speedier recovery.

Neck pain is a common condition after an auto injury, and it's something that Dr. Michael Chanatry sees often in our Jacksonville, FL office. Let's look at the root cause of neck pain after a car accident and see how chiropractic care can help.
It's not surprising that neck pain is the most common symptom experienced after an auto injury. During even a low speed car crash, your head is exposed to very rapid acceleration. In such collisions, a head that normally weighs about 10 pounds can instantly weigh eight times as much. This force exerts an extreme strain on the tissues of the cervical spine. The bones of your neck are held together with strong bands of tissue called ligaments, and these ligaments provide stability for your neck. These ligaments can be sprained during a wreck, just as your ankle ligaments can be sprained. A sprain means that the ligament is stretched or torn.
When you experience a sprained ligament, the damaged tissues gets inflamed and painful, and that's what takes place after a car crash. Your chiropractor helps by increasing flexibility in the injured area, which helps the ligaments heal and helps minimize scar tissue.

We work with many auto injury cases in in our Jacksonville, FL office, and a widespread symptom we see in our patients is headache. The key to recovering from headache caused by a crash is to understand the root cause of the problem and how chiropractic care can help.
There are many different types of headache. Headache that's caused by an auto collision, though, typically begins as tension or strain in the muscle tissue of the cervical spine. In a crash, the neck muscles can be torn, which causes swelling and discomfort. These types of headache can be felt in different places, including the back of the head or even the temple.
Another frequent cause of pain after a collision that we see in our Jacksonville, FL office is cervicogenic headache, or headaches that originate in injured ligaments of the neck. Ligament injury is very common after a crash, and it's important to get care for this type of problem to protect against the development of scar tissue.
Chiropractic is an excellent way to treat headaches, including those brought about by car crashes. Your chiropractic doctor will help reduce the inflammation and strain in your neck, which will help relieve the headache pain.
If you've been injured in a car crash and you're suffering from headache, Dr. Michael Chanatry is here to help. Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is a common symptom after an auto collision, and it's something that Dr. Michael Chanatry sees often in our Jacksonville, FL office. Chiropractic care is a great way to treat thoracic outlet syndrome. Let's look at how thoracic outlet syndrome is caused by a crash and how Dr. Michael Chanatry can help you.
The thoracic outlet is a bundle of nerves and blood vessels that travel through your neck and shoulder to your arm. These vessels don't have a lot of space, so they travel underneath and between the strong bands of muscles that support your head.
In a collision, these muscle groups can be stretched and strained. If damaged, the muscles become swollen and sore, and they can develop scar tissue which restricts motion and puts stress on the tissues of the thoracic outlet. Pressure on the nerves can cause tingling or numbness in the shoulder, elbow and even the hand. Pressure on the blood vessels can also cause problems in the arm.

We manage many auto injury cases in in our Jacksonville, FL office, and a common symptom we see in our patients is back pain. What causes back pain after an auto collision? How can chiropractic help?
During a rear-end motor vehicle accident, your car and car seat are quickly accelerated forward against your torso. Since car seats don't perfectly align with the curve of your back, the seat can put inconsistent pressure on your back. This can cause some of your spinal vertebrae to move in one direction while an adjacent vertebrae might move in another direction. This differential movement can sprain or strain the tissues that hold your spine together. This kind of injury can cause chronic back pain if not treated right away. Thankfully, chiropractic is one of the most effective ways to treat back pain.

Shoulder Pain is a common symptom after an auto collision, and it's something that Dr. Michael Chanatry sees frequently in our Jacksonville, FL office. Chiropractic can be very helpful for shoulder pain symptoms after a crash. Let's see what causes shoulder pain and why chiropractic works.
There are at least two ways that you can develop shoulder pain after an accident: by direct trauma to the shoulder or by referred pain from the neck.
Direct damage can be caused by hitting your shoulder on a hard surface in the car during the crash, or can occur if you have a tight grip on the steering wheel during a rear end impact. With this type of injury, you'll usually be aware of the pain shortly after the crash.
More frequently, Dr. Michael Chanatry finds that shoulder or arm pain doesn't immediately appear after a crash, but begins a few days or weeks after the trauma. This type of shoulder discomfort actually starts in the neck. Injured muscles or ligaments in your neck can pinch nerves in your neck, causing tingling, numbness, or pain in your shoulder, elbow, or wrist.
We've worked with both types of shoulder pain in our Jacksonville, FL office. This care involves chiropractic adjustments to restore your spine's natural flexibility and exercises that strengthen your neck and shoulder.

Research Shows Chiropractic Helps With Asthma
The scientific literature verifies what we see in our office. For example, a study published in Clinical and Experimental Allergy evaluated 31 adult asthma patients after receiving four weeks of chiropractic adjustments. The researchers reported that the patients who received chiropractic adjustments had a 34% decrease in asthma symptoms.
The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics printed another asthma-based study, except this one involved children. In this report, the 36 kids ranged from 6 to 17 years in age and their asthma was regarded as either mild or moderate in severity.
After 12 weeks of chiropractic care, as a whole, the children reported a higher quality of life and a reduced level of severity. As a bonus, they also reported that they relied less on their bronchodilator and these positive effects lasted one year after chiropractic care was finished.

We care for a large number of patients in our Jacksonville, FL office, and Dr. Michael Chanatry has helped many people eliminate a variety of health issues. In spite of this, a common concern that seems to stop some men and women from getting treatment is whether or not chiropractic care is safe. Fortunately, according to three different studies (out of quite a few on the subject), the answer to this concern is a resounding: "Yes! Chiropractic is safe!"
Australian Study: Chiropractic is Safe
The first article(1) was published in Spine and included 183 men and women. Each participant was suffering from some kind of back pain, and half of the patients received real chiropractic adjustments while the other half were given two fake chiropractic treatments. Information was gathered after each real or fake adjustment to determine whether or not any unfavorable negative effects were caused by the actual chiropractic adjustments.
Researchers found that no participants documented any serious undesirable side effects at all after getting one or two sessions of chiropractic. Some people did report that they experienced a headache (9 percent) or muscle stiffness (37 percent) post-treatment, but the effects were not of a serious nature.
Large US Survey Confirms that Chiropractic Adjustments are Safe
The next research study(2), also published in the important journal, Spine, was done in an effort to determine the safety of chiropractic. The study group was much larger -- 20,000 individuals. Each participant received chiropractic adjustments of the neck, with over 50,000 total adjustments for all study participants.
Once again, the researchers discovered no serious adverse side effects. The authors determined the risk of total negative effects to be approximately six out of every 10,000 consultations or every 100,000 treatment sessions. And, just as with the first study, some participants did report non-serious, milder, unwanted effects such as dizziness (16 out of every 1,000 treatment consultations and 15 out of every 1,000 treatment sessions) or a headache (4 out of every 100), and this prompted the authors to determine that "the risk of a serious adverse event, immediately or up to 7 days after treatment, was low to very low."
Chiropractic Care Is Safe for Children
The third study(3) is different from the previous two reports, as it concentrates on the safety of chiropractic care for kids. In this case, the authors analyzed data reported by both chiropractors and parents involving 816 children who participated in 7,173 chiropractic adjustments.
Out of 5,438 chiropractic appointments made for the kids, chiropractors answering the survey reported only three cases where there were negative side effects. When parents were surveyed, they indicated only two adverse side effects out of 1,735 visits. Additionally, both chiropractors and parents reported "a high rate of improvement with respect to the children's presenting complaints."
Based on these three studies (and many more!), chiropractic has been judged safe and effective for everyone. To learn what chiropractic care can do for you, call our Jacksonville, FL clinic and make an appointment today at (904) 743-6700.
