Back Pain and the Sacroiliac Joint

We treat a lot of men and women with back pain in our Jacksonville, FL office, and Dr. Michael Chanatry finds that quite a few cases of back pain stem from the sacroiliac (SI) joint. Investigation has revealed that around one quarter of all back pain starts out in the SI joint, and now new research corroborates what we have observed in our clinic: chiropractic is an effective way to treat this pain.

Research Shows Chiropractic Treatment Helps Increase Movement in the SI Joint

In the study published in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies, thirty-two women who suffered from sacroiliac joint dysfunction were split into two groups and asked to engage in one of two treatment methods. one group received a chiropractic adjustment isolated to the sacroiliac joint, and the alternate group had an adjustment to the sacroiliac joint and the lumbar spine.

Researchers noticed significantly more improvements in both pain and movement immediately following treatment, two days post-treatment, and 30 days after for the patients who underwent high-velocity low-amplitude manipulation to both the sacroiliac joint and the lumbar spine. This suggests that chiropractic treatment applied to these two areas offers both prompt and lasting results for sacroiliac joint pain sufferers—even after only a single treatment session.

So, if you are having trouble with sacroiliac joint pain, or cope with back and leg pain and would like to see if your sacroiliac joint is the source, a consultation at our Jacksonville, FL office may be the first—and best—step towards recovery. Give our office a call today at (904) 743-6700.

AMA Recommends Chiropractic Before Surgery

Although some people are still skeptical about chiropractic care, even the American Medical Association (AMA) recommends that adjustments should be tried prior to surgery--the one option that should be a last resort.

Dr. Michael Chanatry has seen many back pain patients in our Jacksonville, FL office who have been hurting for years and who are afraid that they might need an operation for their back pain. Dr. Michael Chanatry has had great success in helping patients recover and avoid risky back surgery, and the science backs up our experience.

Research Shows Chiropractic Helps You Avoid Risky Surgery

Recently, in one study carried out on almost 2,000 Washington State employees who suffered from a back injury while at work, more than 42% who saw a surgeon first following their injury found themselves having back surgery within three years. That compares to just 1.5% of the patients who first sought treatment with chiropractic care, proving that this non-invasive approach is extremely effective at keeping you off the operating table.

Chiropractic More Effective than Drugs for Back Pain

Don't Choose Drugs for Back Pain

Here in our Jacksonville, FL practice, Dr. Michael Chanatry has helped many people heal from back pain. If you are dealing with back pain, you've probably been tempted to take some medications to relieve the discomfort. You should recognize that studies have shown that chiropractic care is oftentimes a much healthier approach than drugs when it comes to alleviating this common type of problem.

In a 2013 study published in the journal Spine researchers included 101 subjects who had suffered back pain for at least two days. Each one was then designated to one of three groups. The first group, which consisted of 37 people, received chiropractic care and a placebo of the drug diclofenac. The second group of 38 participants received fake chiropractic adjustments and the genuine drug. The third group of 25 people acted as the control as those individuals received sham chiropractic care and also received the placebo, thus having no real care whatsoever.

Both of the groups that received some form of treatment, whether through chiropractic or the drug diclofenac, fared better than the control patients who had no actual care. However, when the two active groups were compared to each other, the people who received chiropractic adjustments had improvements that were "significantly better" than those who took the medications.

Chiropractic Promotes Natural Healing

Because chiropractic is non-invasive and involves no use of medication, it helps enhance healing without negative side effects. For instance, NSAIDs can result in ulcers, heart problems, and other serious health concerns. Plus, the health benefits of chiropractic last longer as it's purpose designed to resolve the source of the spinal interference, not just treat the signs and symptoms.

If you're ready to address your back pain naturally, then chiropractic care is for you. Schedule an appointment in our Jacksonville, FL office with Dr. Michael Chanatry today at (904) 743-6700. We'll help relieve your back problems in a healthy way!

A Drug-Free Approach to Back Pain Recovery

Jacksonville, FL chiropractic back pain treatmentChiropractic is centered on the principle of enabling your body to naturally heal through spinal adjustments and lifestyle changes that encourage overall health. For Dr. Michael Chanatry, this involves working to restore your body's normal performance to avoid the need for medications or surgery. We notice that many of our Jacksonville, FL patients are relieved to find a natural approach for their health issues.

One advantage of chiropractic care is that it helps people reduce or eliminate the use of drug treatments. Medications are commonly supplied to people who have back pain. This is such a serious concern that the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) issued a news release stating that opioid (painkiller) dangers outweigh the advantages when prescribed for back pain.

Some of the most well-known narcotics, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, include hydrocodone (Vicodin), oxycodone (OxyContin and Percocet), morphine, and codeine. Numbers provided by the AAN mention the fact that roughly half of the people taking these types of substances for a period of three months are still on them five years down the road. This can further complicate the difficulty of back pain and recovery, especially if an opiate dependency arises.

Contrast that to chiropractic care which features natural healing and the benefits are obvious. While a medication might be useful at briefly relieving the symptoms of a health problem, it's not a solution to the problem. Drugs don't fix your damaged spine; it will only conceal the pain.

Dr. Michael Chanatry will first examine you to get to the origin of your back problems and then work with you to eliminate the problem -- without any risky medications.

If you're ready for relief, naturally, give our Jacksonville, FL office a call at (904) 743-6700 to make an appointment with Dr. Michael Chanatry.

Chiropractic Helps People Avoid Back Surgery

Jacksonville, FL chiropractic back pain treatmentIn our Jacksonville, FL practice, we see a large number of people who are troubled with back pain, and some of these people have been told they might need surgery to recover. Thankfully, Dr. Michael Chanatry has helped many people get relief without the need for any type of surgery. The science agrees with the success we see in our office. One research study published in the journal Spine found that consulting with a chiropractor as your first step in overcoming with your back issues may actually keep you out of the operating room.

In this study, medical professionals from Dartmouth analyzed data from about 1,900 workers from the state of Washington who first saw either a surgeon or a chiropractic doctor for their back pain issues. They then used three years' worth of follow-up medical data to find out whether the individuals wound up having back surgery in an attempt to correct the problem.

What the researchers observed was that about 43% of the patients who first consulted with a surgeon for their back issues ended up with surgery in that 3-year time frame, whereas only 1.5% of those who first saw a chiropractor had the same fate. The authors wrote:

"Even after controlling for injury severity and other measures, workers with an initial visit for the injury to a surgeon had almost nine times the odds of receiving lumbar spine surgery compared to those seeing primary care providers, whereas workers whose first visit was to a chiropractor had significantly lower odds of surgery."

These are remarkable outcomes. Visiting a chiropractor dramatically decreases your odds of having back surgery, plus the chiropractic patients in this scientific study "had lower odds of chronic work disability" and they also had fewer expensive MRI tests.

Let's also consider this important detail: this study was carried out by orthopedic surgeons from Dartmouth College, and printed in the world's most prestigious medical journal on spinal injury.

Surgery: The Last Resort

Any surgical procedure has risks, but a major downside associated with spinal surgery is that there's a very high failure rate. In an important review in the European Spine Journal, researchers wrote:

"Failed back surgery is a problem that has become sufficiently widespread to even warrant its own special conferences, with recent reviews reporting failure rates ranging from 5 to 50%."

The authors of this same study concluded:

"It is extremely difficult to identify unequivocal predictor factors that can be used to accurately predict the outcome of surgery."

As a chiropractor, Dr. Michael Chanatry believes that surgery should be the absolute last choice for treating back pain. Chiropractic care works to restore your spine to its normal function--without the need of high-risk surgery or drugs--and many scientific studies have established the effectiveness of chiropractic for back pain.

Chiropractic and Medical Care: An Effective Combination

Jacksonville, FL back pain treatmentWe see a number of people with back pain in our Jacksonville, FL office, and Dr. Michael Chanatry has been able to help many of them get relief with chiropractic care. However, recovering from back problems doesn't necessarily mean having to make a choice between chiropractic care and medical treatment, as many people use both types of care with great results.

Study Confirms Chiropractic and Medical Care Work Well with One Another

In a report published by the medical journal Spine experts1 looked at a group of active-duty military personnel between the ages of 18 and 35 who were suffering from both acute pain and limited function due to back symptoms. Some of the test subjects engaged in treatment via standard medical care, while the remainder were given chiropractic adjustments as well as regular medical care, as researchers wanted to see which patients fared better.

Researchers observed that the patients who got standard medical care in combination with chiropractic scored "significantly better" than the group that received medical care alone; 73 percent reported positive benefits compared to just 17% of the medical treatment only group who indicated the same amount of improvement. This was true regarding both pain and level of function at two and four weeks.

Therefore, incorporating these two forms of care can greatly benefit you--the patient--offering advantages when compared to medical care alone. However, while chiropractic care and medicine can work alongside each other, chiropractic offers some distinct advantages over medical therapy.

Where Chiropractic Care Is Successful

Although it might seem as if each method plays a 50/50 role, there is one major advantage that chiropractic care has over medical treatment and that is in patient satisfaction. In fact, a piece of research conducted at UCLA2 that was printed in the American Journal of Public Health reports that, on average, chiropractic patients are generally more satisfied with their recovery than patients undergoing medical care.

According to the experts, the main factors that patients favored over medical treatment were "self-care advice and explanation of treatment." This isn't unexpected, as chiropractors tend to spend much more time advising their patients as to how they can better their health on their own, as well as outlining more thoroughly what to expect from chiropractic care.

Chiropractic Care Is a Natural Approach to Wellness

Without a doubt, the methods associated with chiropractic are very different than those offered with medical therapy, but a large amount of the distinction is the fact that chiropractic is a holistic approach to health and well-being. In contrast to focusing on only relieving the symptoms, chiropractic involves tracking down the primary cause of your pain, which often results in greater improvement as you are addressing the problem at its source.

Furthermore, while medication is sometimes helpful for managing certain conditions, many health issues respond well to a natural approach like chiropractic. This means fewer negative side effects from medications and longer-lasting recovery.

Jacksonville, FL Chiropractic Auto Injury Treatment

Jacksonville, FL auto injury recovery and treatment by Dr. Michael ChanatryEach year, there are millions of auto collisions in the world, and a significant number of people end up getting injured in a collision. While most accidents are "minor," chronic spine pain are still common health issues. The good news is that chiropractic care is a great way to treat these kinds of injuries.

We've helped many auto injury patients in our Jacksonville, FL office, and Dr. Michael Chanatry has been treating people with these types of injuries since 1984. During a car accident, your body is subjected to powerful forces that it simply wasn't built to handle. These forces place strain and stress on your neck, shoulder, and back, and can cause injury to the ligaments that hold your spinal column together. A collision can cause a wide variety of pain issues.

A ligament sprain in the neck can cause pain, swelling, and radicular symptoms in the arm and hand. Chiropractic care works well for these types of injuries, because chiropractic focuses on restoring the healthy function and flexibility of the injured structures.

Jacksonville, FL TMJ Pain and Auto Injury

Jacksonville, FL TMJ Treatment by Dr. Michael ChanatryJaw pain is a fairly typical problem experienced by many people after a car crash, and it can be tough for some health practitioners to diagnose the source of the problem. Complicating the issue, oftentimes you won't develop TMJ symptoms until many weeks or months after the accident.

Dr. Michael Chanatry has treated many people with jaw pain after an injury, and the medical research explains what causes these types of symptoms. During a collision, the tissues in your neck are frequently stretched or torn, causing ligament, muscle, or nerve damage. This can obviously cause pain in the neck and back, but since your central nervous system is one functioning unit, inflammation of the nerves can cause issues in other parts of your body.

For example, with radicular pain, irritation of a nerve can cause prickling or numbness in the arm and hand. Similarly, it can affect parts of your body above the injury, like your head and jaw. Headaches after a crash are very common because of neck injury, and the TMJ works the same way. Dr. Michael Chanatry sees this very frequently in our Jacksonville, FL office.

Research Supports Chiropractic Lessens TMJ Pain After an Auto Accident

Research shows that the root of many jaw or TMJ problems begins in the neck and that treatment of the underlying neck problem can fix the secondary headaches or jaw symptoms. The trick to dealing with these symptoms is simple: Dr. Michael Chanatry will work to restore your spinal column back to health, reducing the inflammatory reaction, treating the injured areas, and eliminating the irritation to the nerves in your spine.

Dr. Michael Chanatry has found that jaw and headache issues often resolve once we return your spine to its healthy condition.
