Chiropractic and Disc Herniation Treatment

Jacksonville, FL non-surgical disc herniation treatmentDr. Michael Chanatry sees many patients weekly in our busy Jacksonville, FL chiropractic office who are looking for relief from the pain and suffering they feel due to herniated discs. Our experience isn't unique; the medical literature confirms that chiropractic care is a successful way to treat herniated disc problems.

Don't Suffer! Dr. Michael Chanatry and Chiropractic Care Helps With Disc Herniation

One particular research study involved 27 people, 8 male and 19 female, who had magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirming a disc herniation in either their neck or lower back. The individuals reported that they were experiencing pain, reduced range of motion, and sensory issues bad enough to keep them off work.

During the course of the research period, the participants were managed using one of two common chiropractic techniques: traction for herniated discs in the cervical area or flexion distraction for the men and women who had herniation issues in the lumbar area.

Each man or woman was seen four or five times per week for the first two weeks, then three times each week, and then as needed for the rest of the study. Based on the seriousness of the disc herniation, therapy ranged anywhere from six weeks to six months, with MRIs being conducted at a variety of stages to determine what effect, if any, the chiropractic care was having in regard to the disc herniation.

The authors discovered that 80 percent of the patients enjoyed a "good clinical outcome," meaning reduced pain and a reduction in other symptoms, such as numbness. Additionally, 77 percent of these subjects also showed MRI evidence that their disc herniation was either reduced or resolved completely. This resulted in 78 percent of the study subjects being able to return to their place of employment and led the researchers to conclude that chiropractic adjustments is both "safe and helpful" for disc herniations.

Chiropractic Effective for Herniated Disc Pain

Jacksonville, FL chiropractic disc herniation treatmentUnfortunately, many of our Jacksonville, FL patients are familiar with the pain caused by a herniated disc all too well. Fortunately, Dr. Michael Chanatry has helped many people with disc pain, and a number of medical studies have verified that chiropractic can help patients recover from this kind of problem.

Research on Chiropractic for Disc Herniations

In one report, doctors from Switzerland selected 148 patients who were suffering with pain in their low back and legs due to a disc herniation (which was confirmed through magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI). Each person then received chiropractic adjustments that focused on the location of his or her disc herniation.

Results were collected after the initial treatment session at set intervals--namely, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year--to find out what type of short-term and long-term effects, if any, chiropractic care offers when it comes to resolving this particular problem. Among the information gathered was the person's self-reported changes in both back and leg pain.

Investigators found that, overall, the patients reported "significant improvement" for both types of pain every time the results were collected. In fact, over 90% of the individuals reported that their pain "improved" within the first three months, with 88% still citing improvement one year after their first treatment session.

Even those people who were defined as "chronic" still reported an improvement in pain at a rate of 89% one year beyond when treatment first began. This is the same positive effect that was found in the following case study.

Case Study Shows that Chiropractic Benefits Chronic Disc Herniation Symptoms

In this study, a 26-year-old male had presented with disc herniation symptoms such as pain in the lower back, left leg, and left groin area, along with left foot drop and muscle weakness. He had suffered with these issues for more than two years after sustaining an athletic injury, and his disc herniation was confirmed via MRI.

After receiving chiropractic care, "The patient responded favorably and his multi-symptom complex resolved within 90 days of treatment." In addition, the patient was still experiencing relief one year after the chiropractic intervention.

Studies like these show how useful chiropractic can be when it comes to alleviating herniated disc pain and relieving the symptoms they produce. So, if you are suffering from back ache caused by a herniated disc and want to find some relief, chiropractic may be an effective solution.

Chiropractic Helps Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Jacksonville, FL natural carpal tunnel treatmentDr. Michael Chanatry sees a lot of patients troubled with carpal tunnel syndrome in our busy Jacksonville, FL chiropractic practice. While some people think that the origin of this wrist-related pain is muscular, it's really a syndrome that stems from the nerves--and not just the nerves in your hands.

Research Proves Chiropractic Helps With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

A recent study published in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy assessed 71 women between the ages of 35 and 59 who were diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. Upon investigating the subjects' neck range of motion, the authors found that the women had less cervical flexibility when compared to a healthy control group.

In addition, it was also discovered that the degree of the women's reported carpal tunnel discomfort was related to the lateral flexion of the cervical spine. In other words, the less flexibility in the neck, the greater the level of pain.

This study is very important, as you can't effectively treat a condition until you fully understand its cause. By understanding that the root of carpal tunnel issues is in the neck, this means that all-natural approaches such as chiropractic can often restore normal function, eliminating the need for risky surgical procedures.

If you are suffering from carpal tunnel pain, call our Jacksonville, FL location and ask how Dr. Michael Chanatry can help you get relief!

Research Supports Chiropractic Helps With Chronic Back Pain

A recent article from the University of Utah verifies what our Jacksonville, FL patients have reported: your Jacksonville, FL chiropractor is the best first option for an episode of back pain.

In this paper, 747 participants were treated for low back pain. Each person was assessed based on the first person they sought treatment with, whether it was a primary care physician, a chiropractor, or a physiotherapist.

What the researchers found is that the individuals who first saw a chiropractor had fewer advanced imaging tests and fewer surgeries.

Other papers have found the same results. A 2012 study reported that chiropractic patients had the best functional recovery and pain relief for chronic back pain.

Chiropractic works by restoring the natural, pain-free function of your spine. Dr. Michael Chanatry and our team help your body heal with gentle chiropractic adjustments that don't use drugs or risky surgical procedures.

Prevent Back Surgery with Chiropractic

Jacksonville, FL Back Pain Treatment without SurgeryEvery year, over 500,000 people have back surgery in the US. Although sometimes it's necessary to have surgery for back pain, the fact is that if you can avoid this type of invasive procedure, you're often better off.

Dr. Michael Chanatry is here to make sure that people in Jacksonville, FL have a healthy, non-surgical option for back problems. We've helped many patients recover from back pain without the need for surgery.

There are countless reasons to avoid unnecessary medical treatments: Surgeries often result in a longer recuperation time and complications, neither of which is a desirable scenario. Luckily, as one study has found, chiropractic may actually keep you off the surgeon's table altogether.

Research Proves Chiropractic Treatment Helps Avoid Back Surgery

In this report, about 1,900 workers with back injuries were evaluated over a three year period. When the workers first sought treatment with a surgeon, over 42 percent wound up having surgery for their pain. For those who saw only a chiropractor, only 1.5 percent had surgery!

These findings suggest that chiropractic care can help you heal from back pain without surgery.

If you live in the Jacksonville, FL area, Dr. Michael Chanatry can probably help you with your back pain. Give our office a call today at (904) 743-6700 for more information or an appointment.

Back Pain and the Sacroiliac Joint

We treat a lot of men and women with back pain in our Jacksonville, FL office, and Dr. Michael Chanatry finds that quite a few cases of back pain stem from the sacroiliac (SI) joint. Investigation has revealed that around one quarter of all back pain starts out in the SI joint, and now new research corroborates what we have observed in our clinic: chiropractic is an effective way to treat this pain.

Research Shows Chiropractic Treatment Helps Increase Movement in the SI Joint

In the study published in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies, thirty-two women who suffered from sacroiliac joint dysfunction were split into two groups and asked to engage in one of two treatment methods. one group received a chiropractic adjustment isolated to the sacroiliac joint, and the alternate group had an adjustment to the sacroiliac joint and the lumbar spine.

Researchers noticed significantly more improvements in both pain and movement immediately following treatment, two days post-treatment, and 30 days after for the patients who underwent high-velocity low-amplitude manipulation to both the sacroiliac joint and the lumbar spine. This suggests that chiropractic treatment applied to these two areas offers both prompt and lasting results for sacroiliac joint pain sufferers—even after only a single treatment session.

So, if you are having trouble with sacroiliac joint pain, or cope with back and leg pain and would like to see if your sacroiliac joint is the source, a consultation at our Jacksonville, FL office may be the first—and best—step towards recovery. Give our office a call today at (904) 743-6700.

Chiropractic More Effective than Drugs for Back Pain

Don't Choose Drugs for Back Pain

Here in our Jacksonville, FL practice, Dr. Michael Chanatry has helped many people heal from back pain. If you are dealing with back pain, you've probably been tempted to take some medications to relieve the discomfort. You should recognize that studies have shown that chiropractic care is oftentimes a much healthier approach than drugs when it comes to alleviating this common type of problem.

In a 2013 study published in the journal Spine researchers included 101 subjects who had suffered back pain for at least two days. Each one was then designated to one of three groups. The first group, which consisted of 37 people, received chiropractic care and a placebo of the drug diclofenac. The second group of 38 participants received fake chiropractic adjustments and the genuine drug. The third group of 25 people acted as the control as those individuals received sham chiropractic care and also received the placebo, thus having no real care whatsoever.

Both of the groups that received some form of treatment, whether through chiropractic or the drug diclofenac, fared better than the control patients who had no actual care. However, when the two active groups were compared to each other, the people who received chiropractic adjustments had improvements that were "significantly better" than those who took the medications.

Chiropractic Promotes Natural Healing

Because chiropractic is non-invasive and involves no use of medication, it helps enhance healing without negative side effects. For instance, NSAIDs can result in ulcers, heart problems, and other serious health concerns. Plus, the health benefits of chiropractic last longer as it's purpose designed to resolve the source of the spinal interference, not just treat the signs and symptoms.

If you're ready to address your back pain naturally, then chiropractic care is for you. Schedule an appointment in our Jacksonville, FL office with Dr. Michael Chanatry today at (904) 743-6700. We'll help relieve your back problems in a healthy way!

A Drug-Free Approach to Back Pain Recovery

Jacksonville, FL chiropractic back pain treatmentChiropractic is centered on the principle of enabling your body to naturally heal through spinal adjustments and lifestyle changes that encourage overall health. For Dr. Michael Chanatry, this involves working to restore your body's normal performance to avoid the need for medications or surgery. We notice that many of our Jacksonville, FL patients are relieved to find a natural approach for their health issues.

One advantage of chiropractic care is that it helps people reduce or eliminate the use of drug treatments. Medications are commonly supplied to people who have back pain. This is such a serious concern that the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) issued a news release stating that opioid (painkiller) dangers outweigh the advantages when prescribed for back pain.

Some of the most well-known narcotics, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, include hydrocodone (Vicodin), oxycodone (OxyContin and Percocet), morphine, and codeine. Numbers provided by the AAN mention the fact that roughly half of the people taking these types of substances for a period of three months are still on them five years down the road. This can further complicate the difficulty of back pain and recovery, especially if an opiate dependency arises.

Contrast that to chiropractic care which features natural healing and the benefits are obvious. While a medication might be useful at briefly relieving the symptoms of a health problem, it's not a solution to the problem. Drugs don't fix your damaged spine; it will only conceal the pain.

Dr. Michael Chanatry will first examine you to get to the origin of your back problems and then work with you to eliminate the problem -- without any risky medications.

If you're ready for relief, naturally, give our Jacksonville, FL office a call at (904) 743-6700 to make an appointment with Dr. Michael Chanatry.

Chiropractic Helps People Avoid Back Surgery

Jacksonville, FL chiropractic back pain treatmentIn our Jacksonville, FL practice, we see a large number of people who are troubled with back pain, and some of these people have been told they might need surgery to recover. Thankfully, Dr. Michael Chanatry has helped many people get relief without the need for any type of surgery. The science agrees with the success we see in our office. One research study published in the journal Spine found that consulting with a chiropractor as your first step in overcoming with your back issues may actually keep you out of the operating room.

In this study, medical professionals from Dartmouth analyzed data from about 1,900 workers from the state of Washington who first saw either a surgeon or a chiropractic doctor for their back pain issues. They then used three years' worth of follow-up medical data to find out whether the individuals wound up having back surgery in an attempt to correct the problem.

What the researchers observed was that about 43% of the patients who first consulted with a surgeon for their back issues ended up with surgery in that 3-year time frame, whereas only 1.5% of those who first saw a chiropractor had the same fate. The authors wrote:

"Even after controlling for injury severity and other measures, workers with an initial visit for the injury to a surgeon had almost nine times the odds of receiving lumbar spine surgery compared to those seeing primary care providers, whereas workers whose first visit was to a chiropractor had significantly lower odds of surgery."

These are remarkable outcomes. Visiting a chiropractor dramatically decreases your odds of having back surgery, plus the chiropractic patients in this scientific study "had lower odds of chronic work disability" and they also had fewer expensive MRI tests.

Let's also consider this important detail: this study was carried out by orthopedic surgeons from Dartmouth College, and printed in the world's most prestigious medical journal on spinal injury.

Surgery: The Last Resort

Any surgical procedure has risks, but a major downside associated with spinal surgery is that there's a very high failure rate. In an important review in the European Spine Journal, researchers wrote:

"Failed back surgery is a problem that has become sufficiently widespread to even warrant its own special conferences, with recent reviews reporting failure rates ranging from 5 to 50%."

The authors of this same study concluded:

"It is extremely difficult to identify unequivocal predictor factors that can be used to accurately predict the outcome of surgery."

As a chiropractor, Dr. Michael Chanatry believes that surgery should be the absolute last choice for treating back pain. Chiropractic care works to restore your spine to its normal function--without the need of high-risk surgery or drugs--and many scientific studies have established the effectiveness of chiropractic for back pain.

If you live in Jacksonville, FL and you need care for your back pain, give our office a call today at (904) 743-6700 for a consultation or an appointment. We'll help get you back on the road to a pain-free life!
