Chiropractic Care Helps Relieve Herniated Disc Problems

Jacksonville chiropractic disc herniation treatmentRegrettably, quite a few of our Jacksonville patients know the pain associated with a herniated disc all too well. On a positive note, Dr. Chanatry has helped many people with disc pain, and a number of scientific studies have verified that chiropractic care can help patients recover from this kind of problem.

Research on Herniated Discs and Chiropractic

In one report, a group of doctors from Switzerland recruited 148 patients who were suffering with pain in their lower back and legs due to a herniated disc (which was confirmed through magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI). Each individual then received chiropractic adjustments that focused on the area of his or her disc herniation.

Results were collected after the initial treatment session at set intervals--namely, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year--to establish what type of short-term and long-term effects, if any, chiropractic offers when it comes to treating this particular condition. Among the information gathered was the person's self-reported changes in both low back and leg pain.

The authors found that, as a whole, the study participants reported "significant improvement" for both types of pain every time the results were collected. In fact, over 90% of the individuals stated that their pain "improved" within the first three months, with 88% still citing improvement one year after their first treatment session.

Even those patients who were defined as "chronic" still claimed an improvement in pain at a rate of 89% one year beyond when treatment first began. This is the same positive result that was found in the following case study.

Case Study Shows that Chiropractic Benefits Chronic Disc Herniation Symptoms

In this paper, a 26-year-old man had presented with disc herniation symptoms such as pain in the low back, left leg, and left groin area, along with left foot drop and muscle weakness. He had suffered with these issues for more than two years after sustaining an athletic injury, and his herniated disc was confirmed via MRI.

After receiving chiropractic care, "The patient responded favorably and his multi-symptom complex resolved within 90 days of treatment." Furthermore, the patient was still experiencing relief one year after the chiropractic intervention.

Studies like these show how beneficial chiropractic can be when it comes to alleviating herniated disc pain and reducing the symptoms they bring about. So, if you are suffering from back ache caused by a herniated disc and wish to find some relief, chiropractic may be an effective solution.

Chiropractic Helps Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Jacksonville natural carpal tunnel treatmentDr. Chanatry sees a lot of people struggling with carpal tunnel syndrome in our busy Jacksonville chiropractic office. While some people think that the source of this wrist-related pain is muscular, it's really a syndrome that arises from the nerves--and not just the nerves in your hands.

Research Supports Chiropractic Helps With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Recent research printed in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy assessed 71 women between the ages of 35 and 59 who were diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. Upon investigating the subjects' neck range of motion, the authors discovered that the patients had less cervical flexibility when compared to a healthy control group.

Furthermore, they also observed that the level of the women's reported carpal tunnel pain was related to the lateral flexion of the cervical spine. In other words, the less range of motion in the neck, the greater the level of pain.

This research is very important, as you can't effectively address a problem until you fully understand its source. By understanding that the root of carpal tunnel issues is in the neck, this means that all-natural approaches like chiropractic can often restore normal function, reducing the need for risky surgical procedures.

Effective Back Pain Treatment

Jacksonville back pain treatmentWe see a number of people with back pain in our Jacksonville practice, and Dr. Chanatry has been able to help many of them find relief with chiropractic care. At the same time, recovering from back pain doesn't necessarily mean having to make a choice between chiropractic care and medical treatment, as many people use both types of care with great results.

Research Confirms Chiropractic and Medical Care Work Well with One Another

In a report published by the journal Spine experts1 looked at a group of active-duty military personnel between the ages of 18 and 35 who reported both acute soreness and restricted function due to back symptoms. Some of the patients engaged in treatment via standard medical therapy, while the rest were given chiropractic care together with regular medical care, as researchers wanted to see which group fared better.

The authors observed that the patients who received standard medical care along with chiropractic care scored "significantly better" than the patients who received medical care alone; 73 percent reported positive benefits compared to just 17 percent of the medical treatment only group who reported the same amount of improvement. This was true regarding both pain and level of function at the two- and four-week marks.

Thus, combining these two forms of care can greatly benefit you--the patient--offering benefits when compared to medical care alone. However, while chiropractic and medicine can work together, chiropractic offers some unique advantages over medical treatment.

Where Chiropractic Care Pulls Ahead

Although it may seem as if each approach plays a 50-50 role, there is one major advantage that chiropractic has over medical treatment and that is in patient satisfaction. In fact, a piece of research conducted at UCLA2 that was published in the American Journal of Public Health reports that, on average, chiropractic patients are generally more satisfied with their recovery than people undergoing medical care.

According to the experts, the main aspects that patients preferred over medical care were "self-care advice and explanation of treatment." This isn't unexpected, as chiropractors commonly spend much more time advising their patients as to how they can better their health on their own, as well as discussing more carefully what to expect from chiropractic care.

Chiropractic Offers a Non-Invasive Approach

Without a doubt, the strategies associated with chiropractic are very different than those offered with medical care, but a large amount of the difference is the fact that chiropractic is a holistic approach to health and well-being. Instead of focusing on simply relieving the symptoms, chiropractic means searching for the primary cause of your pain, which often means greater improvement as you are addressing the problem at its source.

Additionally, while medication is sometimes helpful for managing certain conditions, many health issues respond well to a natural approach like chiropractic. This means fewer negative responses to prescriptions and more permanent recovery.

You don't have to struggle with back pain or other health issues. Give our Jacksonville office a call today at (904) 743-6700. We'll do everything we can to help you get and stay free from back pain.

Shoulder Pain and Car Accidents

Shoulder Pain is a common condition after an auto injury, and it's something that Dr. Chanatry sees often in our Jacksonville office. Let's look at the root cause of shoulder pain after a car accident and see how your chiropractor can help.

There are at least two ways that you can develop shoulder problems after a car crash: by direct trauma to the shoulder or by referred pain from the neck.

Direct trauma can be caused by hitting your shoulder on a hard surface in the car during the impact, or can occur if you have a tight grip on the steering wheel during a rear end impact. With this type of trauma, you'll usually be aware of the pain soon after the crash.

More frequently, Dr. Chanatry finds that shoulder or arm pain does not immediately appear after a crash, but starts a few days or weeks after the trauma. This type of shoulder discomfort actually starts in the neck. Injured soft tissue in your spine can squeeze nerves in your neck, causing tingling, numbness, or pain in your shoulder, elbow, or wrist.

We've treated many types of shoulder problems in our Jacksonville office. This process involves chiropractic adjustments to restore your spine's natural flexibility and home exercises that strengthen your neck and shoulder.

Let us help you recover from shoulder pain. Dr. Chanatry has helped many patients with the same condition, and we can probably help you, too. Dr. Chanatry will first determine what's causing your pain and then work to restore your body to its natural functioning. Give our office a call today at (904) 743-6700 to make an appointment.

Relief from Asthma with Chiropractic

Jacksonville asthma care with chiropracticAsthma is a huge worry for many people in Jacksonville and for a society as a whole, since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that this problem currently affects almost 19 million adults and 7 million children in the United States. A full-blown asthma attack likely means a emergency room visit. Fortunately, Dr. Chanatry has helped many people in Jacksonville get relief from asthma symptoms.

Research Shows Chiropractic Helps With Asthma

The scientific literature verifies what we see in our clinic. For instance, a paper published in Clinical and Experimental Allergy evaluated 31 adult asthma patients after receiving four weeks of chiropractic treatments. The authors reported that the individuals who received chiropractic adjustments had a 34% decrease in asthma symptoms.

The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics published another asthma-based study, except this one involved children. In this article, the 36 kids ranged from 6 to 17 years in age and their asthma was considered either mild or moderate in severity.

After 12 weeks of chiropractic care, as a whole, the children reported a higher quality of life and a lower level of severity. As a bonus, they also reported that they depended less on their bronchodilator and these positive effects lasted one year after chiropractic care was finished.

Studies Confirm that Chiropractic is Safe

Jacksonville, FL Chiropractic for familiesWe see a large number of patients in our Jacksonville, FL clinic, and Dr. Chanatry has helped many people manage a range of health issues. However, one worry that seems to prevent some people from pursuing care is whether or not chiropractic is safe. Fortunately, according to three separate studies (out of countless on the topic), the answer to this concern is a resounding: "Yes! Chiropractic is safe!"

Australian Study: Chiropractic is Safe

The first study(1) was published in Spine and included 183 men and women. Each test subject was affected by some kind of back pain, and half of the individuals received actual chiropractic care visits while the other half were given two sham chiropractic adjustments. Information was gathered after each real or fake adjustment to identify if any unfavorable reactions occurred as a result of the real chiropractic adjustments.

Researchers found that no participants reported any significant negative side effects at all after receiving one or two sessions of chiropractic care. Some participants did state that they experienced a headache (just 9% of people) or muscle stiffness (37 percent) after treatment, but the effects were not serious.

Nationwide Survey Finds that Chiropractic is Safe

A second article(2), also released in the influential publication, Spine, was conducted in an effort to determine the safety of chiropractic care. The study group was much larger -- 20,000 individuals. Each participant received chiropractic adjustments of the cervical spine, with over 50,000 total adjustments for all patients.

Once again, the researchers discovered no serious adverse side effects. The authors calculated the risk of total side effects to be about 6 out of every 10,000 consultations or every 100,000 treatment sessions. And, just as with the first study, some people did report non-serious, milder, unwanted effects such as dizziness (about 1.6%) or a headache (4%), and this prompted the researchers to determine that "the risk of a serious adverse event, immediately or up to 7 days after treatment, was low to very low."

Chiropractic Care Is Safe for Children

The third research paper(3) is different from the first two pieces of research, as it focuses on the safety of chiropractic care for children. In this case, researchers investigated results reported by both chiropractors and parents involving 816 children who participated in 7,173 chiropractic treatment sessions.

Out of 5,438 chiropractic appointments made for the young ones, chiropractors answering the survey reported only three cases where there were adverse side effects. When parents were surveyed, they indicated only two adverse side effects out of 1,735 visits. Additionally, both chiropractors and parents reported "a high rate of improvement with respect to the children's presenting complaints."

Based on these three studies (and many more!), chiropractic has been deemed safe and effective for everyone. To find out what chiropractic can do for you, call our Jacksonville, FL office and schedule an appointment today at (904) 743-6700.

You'll Miss Fewer Days of Work with Chiropractic Care

Jacksonville, FL Worker Injury Treatment and RecoveryWhen you're trying to support your family, take care of your household, and pay all of your bills on time, every day at your job counts. Work injuries can be a serious problem for many folks, and we see many of these types of injuries in our Jacksonville, FL office. Dr. Chanatry understands your situation and is here to help.

The advantages of chiropractic care for work injuries are well-documented. A 2013 survey involving over 600 adults who were suffering with either back or neck pain found that the individuals who didn't see a chiropractor missed work at twice the rate of those who were seeing a chiropractor.

So, why don't more people use Chiropractic Care?

According to the respondents in this paper, two of the major reasons were that they thought they needed a medical referral for chiropractic care (which is typically no longer true) and they overestimated the costs associated with chiropractic treatment sessions by almost 70 percent.

The fact is, chiropractic patients actually spend less on care than medical patients, plus they are less likely to use drugs for their symptoms.

Chiropractic Effective for TMJ Pain

Jacksonville, FL TMJ pain recoveryBecause trauma to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is often rather painful, we do our best to help our Jacksonville, FL patients find relief as quickly and effectively as possible. In fact, Dr. Chanatry will tell you that the medical literature shows just how much chiropractic care can help ease discomfort in the TMJ.

Research Proves Chiropractic Helps With TMJ Pain and Discomfort

For example, a study published in Physiotherapy Theory and Practice involved 15 patients with temporomandibular disorders who were managed with neck adjustments, middle-back adjustments, and trigger point therapy via dry needling. Subjects were assessed prior to these therapies and at 15 days and two months post-treatment. They reported positive results such as reduced pain, greater jaw mobility, and lower disability at both follow-ups.

Another group of researchers carried out a review of almost 800 papers involving manual and manipulative therapy for disorders such as TMJ and discovered similar findings. The group concluded that there is a "fair...level of evidence" that chiropractic care can help ease discomfort associated with TMJ and other upper extremity disorders.

This is great news since the origins of TMJ are largely unknown. While trauma to the jaw or neck can cause pain symptoms, there are other factors to consider as well, such as grinding teeth, osteoarthritis, and clenching of the jaw due to tension.

Studies Show Chiropractic Effective at Preventing Sports Injuries

Jacksonville, FL sports injury treatment and chiropracticWe come across a lot of sports injuries in our Jacksonville, FL office, and Dr. Chanatry is often able to help these athletes. Stanford Children’s Hospital states that more than 3.5 million children aged 14 and younger are injured each year while playing sports. Add that to the close to 2 million adults hurt every year while engaged in sports-related activities, as reported by statistics collected by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, and you can begin to see the necessity of minimizing these types of common injuries. One approach to potentially realize that goal, as reported by a study released in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, is to engage in routine chiropractic treatments.

In Australian Rules football, hamstring and other leg traumas are common, frequently sidelining the players and affecting their team's chance at securing a win. One specific study was conducted using 59 semi-elite Australian Rules footballers to see if chiropractic could reduce these injuries and help keep them playing.

Research Proves Chiropractic Helps in Treating Sports Injuries

For this study in particular, all of the participants was given medical treatment. Furthermore, half of them also engaged in chiropractic treatments at the rate of one session per week for the first 6 weeks, biweekly treatments for the following three months, and one session each month for the last three months of the study. The other group were given no chiropractic intervention at all and acted as the control group to assess the benefits of chiropractic adjustments.

Following twenty-four matches, researchers noted a lessened amount of lower limb muscle strains in the group that had received chiropractic care. Moreover, that very group also missed fewer matches connected to non-contact knee injuries. This lead the researchers to come to the conclusion that chiropractic ought to be made an addition to sports training programs to dramatically lessen the amount of leg injuries.

Chiropractic Helps Shoulder Pain

Jacksonville, FL shoulder pain treatment and recoveryAccording to research, about 2-5 percent of the population will experience painful ailments like frozen shoulder syndrome at some point in their lives. That makes shoulder pain a common problem and one that Dr. Chanatry sees in our Jacksonville, FL clinic on a regular basis.

Research Proves Chiropractic Helps With Shoulder Pain

Usually, this ailment is more prevalent for people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, and it tends to affect women more often than men. While ice, heat, and gentle stretches can often times help relieve the pain, so too can chiropractic.

For instance, a study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine looked at 50 patients with frozen shoulder who received chiropractic care. The duration of care ranged from 11 days to 51 days, with 28 days being the average.

The researchers found that almost all of the study participants fared extremely well with chiropractic care. The authors found:

8 of the subjects reported 50-75 percent improvement
25 indicated improvement ranging from 75- 90 percent
1 participant had complete resolution of their frozen shoulder pain

Only one patient reported an improvement of 50 percent or less, so studies like this demonstrate just how effective chiropractic can be when it comes to decreasing shoulder pain and increasing quality of life.
